It doesn’t matter how old you are or how long you were together, a breakup can feel like your world has come to an end.  Even if you felt like things weren’t working out with them for a while, a split can still be painful.  Suddenly, the person you loved is no longer a part of your life and you feel absolutely lost.  You don’t know what to do, you don’t know where to turn, and you don’t know if you’ll ever find someone to love as much as you loved your ex.  Breaking up with someone that you still love can be one of the most difficult things to do.

As the top Anaheim matchmakers, we know that after your breakup, you’ll probably receive a lot of advice from friends, family, and coworkers, whether you ask for it or not.  Your friends might tell you that the best way to forget and get over it is to hook up with someone new, or perhaps they’ll even tell you that you need to escape the city and all your memories by accepting a job out of town or even out of state.  For now, we want you to ignore what people tell you and follow this expert guide from our matchmakers here at Orange County Singles Dating Service.  Don’t add to pain of your split by doing something you’ll regret later.

1. Do Not Drunk Text Them

Our phones should really have an app to prevent this one from happening.  Everyone has made the mistake of reaching for their phone and confessing their true feelings after a few too many glasses of wine.  If you decide to forget about your breakup by going out on the town with your friends, you might want to give your phone to one of them for safekeeping for the night.

Drunk texting your ex won’t solve anything, and it definitely won’t help you heal from your breakup.  It might be a lot easier to say what’s on your mind after a few glasses of wine, but don’t be fooled, because it’s not going to help you.  Plus, you’ll regret it the next day.  If you plan a night out, either leave your phone at home or give it to a friend.

2. Hook Up with Them Again

Maybe it’s been a few weeks since you got dumped and you’re at home watching a movie on Netflix on a Friday night when you all of the sudden see a text message from your ex asking if they can come over.  Our Anaheim matchmakers, we want you to resist the urge to respond.  It can be tempting to run back in the arms of your ex when you’re feeling down and out.  Maybe you might even think you can work things out again.  But remember that getting back with an ex is never a good idea.

We want you to remember all the reasons why you broke up with them in the first place.  Clearly something was wrong that caused the relationship to unravel and come to an end.  The next time you get the “I miss you” text, ignore it and enjoy your newfound independence.

3. Hook Up with One of Their Friends

After a breakup, you might be really angry with your ex; after all, they just destroyed your heart and broke it into a thousand pieces.  You might want to get back at them so they can feel exactly how you’re feeling.  As tempting as it is to go for one of their friends and make them jealous, you must understand that revenge won’t do anything for you.

If you plan on hooking up with one of their friends to get back at your ex, stop right there.  Hooking up with one of their friends might seem like the easiest way to hurt them, but it will backfire on you in the end.  Do you want to know the best revenge in the world for someone who hurt you?  It’s simply to move on and lead a happy life on your own.  Jumping in bed with one of their friends won’t help you heal your broken heart.  It will actually create nasty gossip about you, and that’s the last thing you want.

4. Asking Their Friends About Them

You used to spend every second of the day together.  You would text each other many times a day, you talked about anything and everything, and you used to know all the details of their day, that is until you broke up.  Now, they’re gone, so it’s normal to find yourself wondering what they’re up to, who they’re hanging out with, and if they’re feeling the same way as you.  Who better to ask this information than their friends?

Sometimes you might want to reach out to a close mutual friend and ask for all the info on your ex.  But this is a terrible idea.  Do you really want to hear what your ex is up to?  The info might not make you happy, especially if your ex has already moved on and isn’t thinking about you at all these days.  As professional matchmakers, we want you to focus on your own life and what you’re doing, not what your ex is up to.  If you stick to your own routines and hobbies, you’ll be distracted from wondering what your ex is up to all the time.

5. Hooking Up with Someone New

You’ll probably feel very lonely after your breakup, and that’s normal.  Let’s face it, everyone feels that way.  It’s pretty common for recent singles to hook up with someone when a long-term relationship ends, but it’s also one of the worst things you can do after a breakup.  We know that being single after being in a relationship is hard, but you need to get used to it and embrace this time alone.

You have just come out of a relationship, your heart is still broken, and it needs to heal before you start something new.  Hooking up with someone might feel great in the moment, but it is going to hurt you in the long run.  Remember, being alone doesn’t have to mean feeling lonely.  Your friends and family are always there for you.

These are the top five things you never want to do after a breakup.  Is there anything else you can think of that we should add to our list?
